Psychobilly

Clothing epitomises the effect the music had on the individual. They became extreme to the degree of expressing individuality and attempted to define themselves. Fashion and subculture altered significantly in this period of the youth. Psychobilly styles were derived from the “1950 rockabilly and rock-and-roll as 1970 punk fashions”. The aim of their clothes was to alter people’s perception of themselves.

Psychobillies enjoyed the freedom of expression by being tattooed which was influenced by the movie profession. Macabre nature such as bats, skulls and gravestones were tattooed on their arms.  They wanted to change people’s perception of themselves as “the goal of the psychobilly was to live fast, die young and leave a not so beautiful corpse”.
